GFCI and AFCI Protection: What Florida Code Requires and Why
Bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor outlets all require GFCI protection under current code, and knowing the difference between GFCI and AFCI protects both your home and your family.
GFCI: Protection From Shock
A ground-fault circuit interrupter monitors the electricity flowing through a circuit and cuts power in a fraction of a second if it detects current leaking somewhere it shouldn't, like through water or a person. That's why GFCI outlets are required in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and anywhere near water, including outdoor outlets, pool equipment, and dock wiring across Tampa Bay's waterfront communities.
AFCI: Protection From Fire
An arc-fault circuit interrupter detects the electrical arcing that happens when wiring is damaged, frayed, or loose, which is a leading cause of house fires. Current code requires AFCI protection on most living-area circuits including bedrooms and living rooms. Older Tampa Bay homes being remodeled or rewired need both types added where they're missing, and it's one of the most common corrections we find during an electrical inspection ahead of a home sale.
